Dates and Times of Employment:

Candidates for this position must be available to work the scheduled program dates. Program hours are from 6am – 6pm. An exact work schedule will be provided by the Day Camp Site Coordinator upon hire, and will take an individual’s availability into consideration.

Summer Day Camp Season: June 1 – August 3, 2018

Position Purpose:

Day Camp Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily experience at a Kama`aina Kids day camp.

Nature of Supervision:

Works under the supervision of Day Camp Site Coordinator, Group Leader-In-Charge (GLIC) or independently in their absence. Day Camp Counselors supervise a group of 15-20 elementary school-aged children (grades K-6), but are generally not responsible for supervising other employees.

Essential Job Functions:

    1.    Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their assigned group within activities
           and throughout the camp to meet the intended outcomes, as set by Kama`aina Kids.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
  • Assures campers are properly supervised at all times.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines, as established by Kama`aina Kids Day Camp Site Coordinator.
    2.    Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the
           organization’s mission and outcomes.
  • Responsible for leading or assisting with the teaching of activities.

  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.

  • Provide for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Assist in program areas such as waterfront, site assembly, outdoor games, choreographed dances, and arts and crafts as directed.
      3.    Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for all program participants.
  • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.

  • When appropriate, ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by Day Camp

    Site Coordinator.

  • Be alert to campers needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with day camp site coordinator when appropriate.

  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to site coordinator.

    4.    Be a role model to campers in your attitude and behavior.

  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.

  • Set a good example to all program participants, in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, punctuality, self-respect, and sportsmanship.

    5.    Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.

  • Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their children to have a successful camp experience.

  • Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.

Other Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Welcome all campers, parents, and guardians in a warm, friendly manner.
  2. Understand and be in accordance with Kama’aina Kids mission, policies, and values.
  3. Report to work properly dressed according to the guidelines of Kama`aina Kids’ dress code and as scheduled by the Day Camp Site Coordinator
  4. Provide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off camp property
  5. Organize activities, as directed by Day Camp Site Coordinator, that is in line with the objectives of the program.
  6. Lead and control the group of children assigned to you in all daily activities.
  7. Provide safe, structured activities during transitions, down times, or as requested by Day Camp Site Coordinator.
  8. Care for and maintain facilities and equipment used by the group.
  9. Attend all staff meetings or employee training as determined by the Day Camp Site Coordinator.
  10. Oversee proper sign-in and sign-out procedures of daily rosters.
  11. Participation in all overnight camps scheduled for your site (summer season only
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  2. Ability to pass criminal background checks and fingerprinting, prior to the start of employment
  3. Current Red Cross CPR & First Aid Certificate, or ability to obtain one prior to the start of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Prior experience working with children in grades K-6, in a recreational or educational setting.
  2. Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor Certification, or ability to obtain one
  3. Ability to work with all age levels.

Physical Effort Required:

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating in activity and provide necessary instruction to campers.

  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques, when necessary.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers, throughout the entirety of a work shift.

  • Ability to teach, supervise, and participate with children in sports and other activities that may require running, jumping, bending, squatting, or lifting and carrying equipment that may weigh up to 40lbs.
